"If a steak is undercooked, we can fix that in 10 minutes. But if something needs to be fixed with the physical restaurant itself, it could take a month," and sometimes "10 months." That is how Dawoud Ghafarshad, general manager and director of events and operations at Walter's Restaurant, described the past two years to the Claremont Courier earlier this month.
The building at 310 N. Yale Ave. reopened on Oct. 14, 2026, more than two years after the August 2024 fire. It opened with lunch three days a week and weekend brunch, and then added one block of hours each week. The grand reopening has been pushed out on purpose to the end of this year or early next. The Walter's on Yale this November is the version the staff is still tuning, and it is open to anyone who wants to be part of that.
Twenty-Six Months on One Corner
The fire broke out early on the morning of Aug. 22, 2024, shortly before 2:33 a.m. No one was hurt, according to the Courier's report that week. It came less than a year after the restaurant marked a milestone. The Ghafarshad family celebrated 50 years of ownership in 2023, with an event scheduled for Dec. 3 of that year.
The family's run started small. Walter Boldig opened Walter's Coffee Shop in 1957, and Nangy and Fahima Ghafarshad bought what was then a 35-seat business in 1973. Over the decades the Courier called it the place for birthdays, anniversaries, wedding events and casual meetups, and reported that "Let's meet at Walter's" had become a common local phrase.
That is the habit the reopening is built to bring back. Ghafarshad told the Courier he was looking forward to "being the place where friends and colleagues get together at their regular meeting spot."
Why the Doors Opened Before the Party
The weekly phases were planned. "We want to start slowly, in phases, and work out the kinks as we go to minimize mistakes and avoid letting our guests down," Ghafarshad told the Courier. He said the grand reopening would come once "all of our systems are working like clockwork, and our staff is fully hired and trained."
The staffing piece shows how much has to be rebuilt. Most of the previous employees moved on to other jobs during the closure. About 12 former staff members are returning. A kitchen and dining room that mixes long-time staff with new hires needs time on the floor, and the schedule gives it that time one service at a time.
Each phase added hours, seating areas and menu items, according to the restaurant's website. Laid out week by week, the order is clear. Daytime came first, then dinner, and the late-night hours came last.
| Phase posted by Walter's | Lunch | Brunch | Dinner | Happy hour | Late night |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1, Oct. 14–18 | Wed–Fri, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. | Sat–Sun, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. | Not yet | Not yet | Not yet |
| Week 2, Oct. 21–25 | Wed–Fri, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. | Sat–Sun, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. | Wed–Sun, 5–10 p.m. | Not yet | Not yet |
| Week 3, Oct. 27–Nov. 1 | Tue–Fri, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. | Sat–Sun, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. | Tue–Sun, 5–10 p.m. | Tue–Fri, 3–6 p.m. | Thu–Sat, 10 p.m.–1:30 a.m. |
The third week is the most recent phase the restaurant has posted. It runs Tuesday through Sunday and includes every service Walter's offers. Mondays are not on that posted schedule. Hours may keep shifting while the phases settle, so the current week is best checked at waltersrestaurant.com before heading over. Reservations go through the "Reserve Your Table" link on the homepage.
The Room Regulars Will Walk Into
Walter's used the closure to change the layout. Ghafarshad listed the changes for the Courier:
- The front entrance and front dining room used to sit on two levels and are now one.
- The bar has been reworked, and a new lounge occupies the front of the building.
- New booths line the windows.
- The sidewalk patio has a new look.
- The quick-service platters by the entrance are still for sale, now at the south end of the restaurant.
Behind the walls, the work went further. "We removed a lot of old wiring and debris from the attics, installed brand-new roofing and camera systems, and put new protocols in place in the kitchen to help prevent anything like this from happening again," Ghafarshad told the Courier. That is the month-or-10-months kind of work from the opening quote. Most of it cannot be seen from a booth.
A Shorter Menu, on Purpose
Ghafarshad described the opening menu as "a bit smaller, with more modern plating and presentation." Both new and past items are set to be added over time. That fits the phases. Each week brought more of the menu back along with more of the room.
Prices have also changed. A statement on the restaurant's site says that rising costs for labor, food and restaurant supplies left "no choice but to raise our menu prices and charge for fresh baked bread served at the table."
Private events are being booked again. Weddings, receptions, retirement and birthday parties, and baby showers can be reserved online. The posted packages start at $30 per person for a three-selection hors d'oeuvres menu, with set menus from $35 per person and a premium set menu from $47. For anyone planning a holiday gathering, those are the only prices Walter's currently posts.
The Neighbors on the Same Corner
The fire did not stay inside one business. A week later, the Courier reported that five adjacent businesses had been damaged. Balboa Thrift and Loan, next door at 306 Yale Ave., had extensive water and roof damage. Lumen Spa had roof and water damage. Tenants at 269 W. Bonita Ave. dealt with smoke and soot. At the time, Balboa planned to operate temporarily from 269 W. Bonita Ave. during repairs.
Both neighbors are open again. Balboa Thrift and Loan lists its Claremont branch at 306 Yale Avenue with weekday hours. Lumen Spa takes bookings at 267 W. Bonita Ave.
What Is Still Ahead
The grand reopening remains on the calendar for "either near the end of this year or the beginning of next year," Ghafarshad told the Courier. Until then, the restaurant has said it will keep adding hours, seating and menu items until it is back at full capacity. Anyone who books a brunch table or a late-night seat this month is eating at the restaurant in the weeks it is being tuned, before the formal celebration.
Ghafarshad closed his conversation with the Courier by thanking customers "for reminding us how much Walter's has been missed." The next date to watch is the grand reopening announcement, which will be posted at waltersrestaurant.com.
